Hi-definition Ultrasound for my twins

My anxiety was running extremely high after hearing the news about my twins pregnancy and being classified as “high risk.” Then the news about one of my twins having a 2 vessel cord put me over the top with worry and emotion. To help settle me down, my OB doctor referred me to a neonatal specialist who performed a hi-definition ultrasound.
My husband and I both just happen to be engineers so in our minds, more data is better. My OB knew that about me and I think that’s part of the reason she referred us. Whatever the reason, I’m just glad she did.
The hi-definiition ultrasound wasn’t actually all that impressive. I was expecting something much more clear and visible than what we saw on the screen. However the real benefit from the appointment came in the consultation with the neonatal specialist doctor. He was very clear with us and provided us a thorough picture regarding our risks and highlighted the importance of keeping my twins healthy and inuertro for as long as possible. I remember leaving his office thinking; “30 weeks, 30 weeks, we just have to make it to 30 weeks!!”
Ofcourse longer is better, but at 30 weeks the twins had a very good chance of being born healthy and not having any long term health issues. It was great to have that clarity and knowledge from the specialist. We actually ended up delivering our twins at 34.5 weeks so we made it!!
The other thing we learned during our appointment with the specialist was an introduction to the concept of Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome. It was a good introduction and we ended up learning a lot more over the next few months.
